Luke Carbon is a woodwind multi-instrumentalist and educator based in Melbourne. After completing his undergraduate degree at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University under Diana Tolmie, he studied at the Australian National Academy of Music during 2015-2016 under David Thomas, where was awarded the Musica Viva Chamber Music Prize, and the Outstanding Programming in a Solo Recital award for his exploration of third stream music including compositions by Gunther Schuller, William Russo, and Yitzhak Yedid.

Luke has appeared as a guest musician on both clarinets and saxophones with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria, and as guest clarinetist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Victorian Opera. He has also performed with ELISION Ensemble, Syzygy Ensemble, Ensemble Offspring, and Rubiks Collective. Alongside percussionist Thea Rossen as Enyato Duo, he commissioned and premiered works by Paul Dean, Tim Hansen, Samantha Wolf, and has additionally premiered many other solo and chamber works. As a jazz musician he has performed with Fem Belling, Adam Rudegaire, Alexander Nettlebeck, and the Idea of North. He appears with the clarinet-cello-piano group Mylark Trio as part of the Musica Viva NSW Regional Touring roster for 2024.

As a woodwind doubler across clarinets, flutes, saxes, oboes, and bassoon, Luke has appeared in over a dozen professional musical theatre productions including Mary Poppins, Phantom of the Opera, An American in Paris, Evita, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, and The Sound of Music.

Luke’s discography includes Liquid Crystal (2021, MOVE Records) with pianist Alex Raineri (“Two master performers shine in a demonstration of versatility, musicality and technical skills” - the Music Trust), Brightest Threads (2020, Made Now Music) which was included on Rolling Stone's “Best Music of 2020 - Staff Picks”, and the self-released Myth of the Cave (2021), a live recording of Yithak Yedid’s groundbreaking trio in which he appears alongside the composer on piano, and bassist Jono Coco.

Luke holds Masters degrees in teaching and music research, postgraduate qualifications in marketing, and licentiate diplomas across multiple instruments. He currently teaches at Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar, and Huntingtower School.

Luke plays on clarinets by Schwenk und Seggelke, and a Selmer Privilege bass clarinet with a neck made by Das Blashaus.
